The last weekend in February, my girlfriend & I flew to Malta to see the country and run in the Malta Half Marathon. We ended up (as usual) spending a lot of time wondering. We walked through the streets of Sliema, Valletta and a few smaller towns along the coast. It was during these walks that I noticed the Maltese number plates (“license plates” in Amerikan) and their interesting typeset. I may have looked like a nutter, but I took photos of number plates until I had all 36 letters and numbers.
Personal favorites: 0, Q, and J. Also, the I is weird, but I wouldn’t call it a favorite.
Truth be told, I know nothing about typography, but I do know about the 1988 movie Batman and I think Joker said it best, “I don’t know if it’s art, but I like it.”
