2010 World Cup Uniform Typography
I’ve spent the past two weeks glued to ESPN watching the 2010 World Cup and I find myself repeating continuously, “what is the font on their jersey?”
I did some research and this is what I found for the majority of teams.
Unity
Unity is a custom alphabet designed by Yomar Augusto for Adidas. It is used by Argentina, Denmark, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Slovakia and Paraguay.
[Nike]
I’m still looking for the name of the font used on the Nike kits. It is used by Australia, Brasil, South Korea, Portugal, Serbia, and the USA.
Crepello
Crepello is a custom font made for Puma by Paul Barnes of Commercial Type. It is used by Italy, Uruguay, and Switzerland.
Olembe
Olembe, like Crepello above, was designed by Paul Barnes of Commercial Type for Puma. It is used by Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.
I have not been able to find out about the names of the fonts used on England (Umbro), Honduras (Joma), Chile (Brooks), or North Korea – so if anyone knows, give me a shout.
FontFeed has a good interview with Paul Barnes about the creation of both Crepello & Olembe.
Note: All the photos used here were taken from World Soccer Shop (which is why I’ve only got 22).

I find crepello quite offensive, don’t know exactly why, I’m just not into lower case names on shirts I think.
I like this. I’ve wondered it myself with some of the shirts. I really like the Mexico and Japan shirts.
@John D – Did you see this sample of Crepello with the capital letters (http://fontfeed.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/crepello_specimen.png)
@KJ – Yeah, unity looks nice with those color schemes. I still like the Nike kits the best, but it might just be because of the arched lettering (and not because the USA uses them).
I reaally need the name of the korean’s tshirt.
!!!
@Daniel – The Korean shirt is made by Nike, using one of their in-house fonts. I’ve also found a link to the Nike World Cup sets. I believe the Korean top uses the blue set.
Thanks John!
The blue set is used by Holland.
Bye!
Hey! , Where Can i find the font like Ghanas Tshirt Number ????!
@ZIDAN – Ghana uses the Olembe font. It was designed for Puma by Paul Barnes. Its is not available for purchase and I’m not aware of any clones out there. Sorry.
